Mark your calendars for November 8, because that’s when a massive asteroid will sweep past the Earth.
The asteroid called 2005 YU55 has a diameter of 1,300 feet and will approach the planet at 0.85 lunar distances.
Due the object’s size and whisking by so close to Earth, an extensive campaign of radar, visual and infrared observations is being planned.
“The close Earth approach of 2005 YU55 on Nov. 8, is unusual since it is close and big. On average, one wouldn’t expect an object this big to pass this close but every 30 years,” Live Science quoted Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, as saying.
Because of its size and proximity to Earth, the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., has designated the space rock as a “potentially hazardous asteroid.” “This flyby will be the closest by any near-Earth asteroid with an absolute magnitude this bright since 1976 and until 2028,” said Lance Benner, a research scientist at JPL and a specialist on radar imaging of near-Earth objects.
Initially, the object will be too close to the sun and too faint for optical observers.
But late in the day (Universal Time) on Nov. 8, the solar elongation will grow sufficiently to see it. Early on Nov. 9, the asteroid could reach about 11th magnitude for several hours before it fades as its distance rapidly increases, Benner added.

Nokia N8 – pretty in pink
Voted as the colour of the year for 2011 by Pantone, pink is definitely the colour to be seen with this season, it seems.
Rachael Bell, Senior Designer, Nokia adds this:
Following the fantastic response to the range of colors we launched for the Nokia N8, it seemed a natural step to extend this choice. The Nokia N8 in pink complements the original line up well with its expressive, intense hue.Of course you’ve got the usual services on the Nokia N8, such as free Ovi Maps for navigating around town and Ovi Store for downloading apps but there’s also a bunch of other pink themed apps too.
There’s the Little Pink Diva Theme for adding some colour into your menus and a great Pink Neon Clock too when it comes to making sure you’re not late for your next meeting, and theELLE fashion app keeps you up-to-date with the latest fashion, beauty and celebrity news.

Even as the Windows Phone 7 copy-and-paste update codenamed "NoDo" is being rolled out, Microsoft has started shipping a security update for its smartphone operating system. The fix is for the SSL certificates that were issued by Comodo after one of its resellers was hacked by an Iranian hacker in March.
NoDo is version 7390; the new security update brings the operating system up to version 7392. As might be guessed from the version numbers, this means that the security update includes all the NoDo updates, and so is only available to those network operators that have authorized the NoDo update.
NoDo is now available for almost everyone. AT&T-branded HTC Surrounds are now eligible for the update, and Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile devices in Europe are also receiving the update. The remaining stragglers are Telefonica in Spain—which is still apparently testing both the February pre-update and NoDo—and Telstra in Australia, though Telstra has authorized the update and is now waiting for Microsoft to release it.
Though the pre-NoDo update first released in February must be installed separately, the cumulative nature of subsequent updates means that those customers not currently on NoDo should only need to install one further update that will be a combination of 7390 and 7392.
Microsoft also explained some of the issues with Samsung handsets that resulted in their updates being halted. Samsung used two different suppliers to provide parts for the Focus, and as a result there are two different models with slightly different flash memory components. Handsets with the original components are receiving the update; handsets with the alternative parts are not. Microsoft didn't specify the exact problem this caused, but it now says that an updated package is nearly ready.

ORLANDO, Fla.—RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis May 3 showed off the Blackberry PlayBook here at BlackBerry World, one day after the executive defended the 7-inch tablet's tardiness to the market. The PlayBook launched April 19 to largely negative reviews. Experts were put off by the lack of a native e-mail application. Undaunted, Lazaridis boasted about the PlayBook's integration with Adobe's Flash multimedia technology as well its smooth Web browsing and multitasking, which lets users run videos and access other applications at the same time. To show unity, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen joined Lazaridis on stage to talk up Flash on the PlayBook. But the real kicker came when Lazaridis trotted out Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who appeared at the show for the first time in its 10-year history. RIM and Microsoft are fresh off an expansion of their mobile enterprise alliance the two companies announced in March. At BlackBerry World, Ballmer confirmed that Microsoft Bing would become the default search and maps applications for BlackBerry devices. Moreover, Bing search will be integrated with BlackBerry OS at the operating system level. Ballmer riffed on Android talking about its growing volume but frustrating developers and Apple, which he described as inflexible and offering limited choices. Ballmer captured the keynote crown until Lazaridis stole it back by announcing that BlackBerry World's 6,000 attendees would all receive a free, 16GB PlayBook. In this slide show, eWEEK captures the opening keynote images.
